As we age, our risk for disease and injury naturally increase, as does the risk of the loss of mobility and even independence. It is a fact of life that no one enjoys thinking about. But there are ways to slow down the aging process while making the body stronger and more resilient, even at a later age in life. That is through regular exercise.
Exercise is probably more important for seniors than for any other age group. Exercise helps increase circulation and flexibility, it can help lower blood pressure and maintain a healthy weight, it can increase mental acuity, and it can provide a means of social interaction. Exercise for seniors is vital for remaining healthy, alert, and most importantly, independent.
Even if you have never participated in an active exercise regime, it is never too late to start moving your body. And it is easier to get started than you might think. Simple things that you do can = better wellness and physical fitness. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
Try parking the car a little farther back in parking lots. Walk briskly to the entrances.
Try using stairs rather than the elevator. Move your legs slowly and deliberately up each step, to maximize the movement.
Take walks in the park or around the block with your dog, or a small group of friends.
Join a fitness group at the YMCA, a senior center, your church, or a recreational center. There isn’t one for you? Get one started yourself!
Take ballroom dancing lessons.
When it comes to getting out and exercising regularly, the best motivation can be to exercise with a friend. Not only can it be more fun to have someone to talk to, but it is also very encouraging to have a person to exercise with!
And when it comes to staying motivated to keep moving, find an activity that you truly enjoy. You will find that you will be more likely to stick with it, and you will actually look forward to exercising! It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you are moving your muscles and joints regularly, moderately, and safely.
Getting older doesn’t mean you have to sit in a rocking chair and knit or do crossword puzzles for the rest of your life! Exercise is more beneficial to you now than ever before. You will increase longevity and independence, and decrease those aches and pains and the likelihood of diseases and other age-related health problems. You owe it to yourself and your family to make every year of your life the best it can be!
